Although I have some publisized some enlightening photos, I have done some pen drawings that I am having framed. They are pretty cool, of buildings, objects etc.
I know....focus on my music, but j'adore le DIA. There is no place in any museum that one can walk into seeing art work displayed all around you muraled on the walls of the DIA. Van Gogh, Renoir, Rodin, historical periods with facaced presenting life yrs. ago depicting stellar art work. Exhibits such as the "Van Gogh" exhibit" showed detail forming masterpieces. The Egyptian exhibit with artifacts of historical eras broken up into dynasties also had afterlife accentuations to obtain their heaven. I remember...and remember the tomb of the "wealthly woman." Dreams I had about snakes ....and selling pottery etc.
There are so many memories of me meeting friends after taking the Jefferson bus to go to the DIA. But, again in my mind what can I do with this....make pen drawings...and appreciate.
For a young person going to the DIA it is a experience that enhances imagination, and growth of spirit if nothing less.
I appreciate the Arts. I send new material to the Performing Arts Copright Section of the L. Of C. at least 3 xs a yr. but never have I sent a collection of my artistry.of pen work on paper.
Maybe I should...
I appreciate the Arts!!

NOT QUITE DIRTY...HUSH: A DIRTY SHOW FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER SHOWCASE Pulse Lounge • Thursday, March 8, 2007

From Detroit's own internationally acclaimed Dirty Show® emanates a more intimate exhibition of fine art nude photography entitled "Hush:
A Dirty Show Photographer Showcase, Series One". Opening on March 08 2007 at Pulse Lounge in Detroit, the Hush exhibit will feature elegant sensual works of four specially selected Detroit-area photographers showcased at recent and past Dirty Show® events. These photographers are:

- BT Charles (www.btcharles.com), whose vintage-inspired erotic photographs have recently been published in "The New Erotic Photography" by Taschen Publishing as well as showcased at The World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Florida. BT is also a featured artist in the upcoming Colin Duerr film on Detroit Erotic Artists, tentatively due sometime in 2007.

- Chris Maher (www.dreamsofthegoddess.com), who has earned a living as a fine art photographer for more than 25 years, also co-authored the book "50 Fast Digital Camera Techniques" as well as written regular columns in Shutterbug Magazine and eDigital Photo Magazine. His current work includes his "Spirit Series" photographs of sensual anthropomorphic smoke and "Figure Series", a continuing exploration of the female form in nature and studio.

- DVS (www.dvsdetroit.com), whose goddess-inspired spiritual photography reflects a fascination in shadowplay, uncovers the emotive persona within his imagery. His work, featured in Photographer's Forum "Best of 2005" book of international collected works, and pseudonym, a play on the word "devious", clearly reflects the definition of "departing from the common norm".

- Danielle Kaltz a 'shoot from the hip' type of photographer whose approach grants her 'slices of life' that most would not keep in this digital age. Ranging from modern digital cameras to antiques refitted with current film sizes, the results are much like old 'flash bulb'
memories purposely cropped oddly or softly out of focus to reveal an aura of intrigue.

The opening artist reception begins at 6pm on Thursday, March 08 2007 and will continue at Pulse Lounge until March 31 2007. Most works will be available for purchase. Pulse (www.pulsedetroit.com), Detroit's simple, yet sophisticated cocktail lounge, is located at 156 Monroe Street in downtown Detroit.

Hope to see you there!

Got this from a social worker. Please consider the research and pass this along. Thanks!

Why poor people count
Keeping SOS/TABOR off the ballot!
With Michigan's economy recovering from a long tenure of down sloping employment rates and budget cuts, cutting social service programs should not even be an option.

Interest groups are now asking Michigan voters to sign a petition that would cut social service programs that many unemployed and low-income families have come to need to survive.

Stop Overspending (SOS) is a legislation that is said to stop government over spending, but in actuality cuts social service programs and gives more money to non-constituent based causes.

The Michigan League of Human Services reported that 'adoption of the Stop Overspending (SOS) Ballot Initiative would significantly worsen Michigan's ongoing fiscal crisis and narrow the options for its solution—forcing deep cuts in K-12 and higher education, public health and safety, and child and family support and protection programs.'

This same piece of legislation was passed in Colorado in 1992 under the name "Taxpayers Bill of Rights" (TABOR). The result of the legislation left devastating effects on their economy and social service programs. The same results, if passed in Michigan, will have presumably the same affects.

According to MLHS, under the TABOR legislation Colorado declined from 35th to 49th in the nation in K-12 spending, and under TABOR, inflation adjusted funding for instate college students declined by 31 percent.

Currently the condition of higher education enrollment is declining in Michigan due to rising costs of tuition. Michigan has 109 degree granting institutions in the state that serves over 550,000 students. With the trend of adjusting funding for instate college students, the numbers of students being taught may decline.

On the national front, the budget situation has caused states to consider such legislation like SOS and TABOR due to a lack of funding from the federal government.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) 85 percent of the 2005 budget enacted by the Congress and the President stems from tax cuts and increases in defense, international aid and homeland security. None of these moneys were geared towards domestic spending.

To stop government over spending the state does not need to pass legislation that will cut social service programs. The state needs to find reasonable and voter friendly solutions to a fiscal problem.

CBPP reported that in order to maintain the current trend of tax cuts and balance the federal budget 41% of social security benefits would be cut, 61% of defense spending, 53% of Medicare and only 29% of every other program excluding those above, would have to be cut.

One suggestion that might alter the need for such legislation like SOS and TABOR is to stop allowing tax cuts for people with high incomes levels. This would keep a stable amount of money in the federal budget, allowing for more allocation to social service programs that would keep human needs met across the board.

In 2005, $39 billion in "entitlement" programs were cut over the past five years. This includes Medicaid, children's programs, child support enforcement, foster care and student loans.

The Congressional Budget Office indicates that if the entitlement programs were cut it would cause low-income people to forgo much needed health care because of increased cost. It would result in $8 billion in child support going uncollected. And this would also raise charges for student loans.

With the hind sight given from the outcomes of budget cuts in 2005, and the similar circumstances arising in 2006, the president's proposed budget for 2007 still resembles a high income tax cut policy with domestic discretionary programs being cut deeper.

In order for people to "pick themselves up by their boot straps" and survive in our capitalistic economy, we need to offer social service programs to maintain a base of human needs in our society.

SOS/TABOR denies those human needs in reality, and on paper creates a facade of just cause. Do not sign the SOS petition in Michigan if you want Michigan's economy to become stable and successful for all people.

The City of Northville is a distinctive community of approximately 6500 residents located on the western fringe of the Detroit Metro area. The 2.2 square mile area is equally divided between Wayne and Oakland Counties and is about 30 minutes from downtown Detroit and 25 minutes from downtown Ann Arbor.

The Northville area is known for its rolling hills and attractive countryside. The City retains a small-town atmosphere with stately Victorian-era architecture in its Historic District and well-kept older homes built before the 1930s. A "walk to" downtown boasts of old-fashioned street lamps, benches, specialty shops, galleries, theaters, restaurants, businesses, and preserved landmarks.

Hello Everyone,

Once Upon a time in a Digital Village is a distance learning project that will be hosting Stephen Ujlaki, Chairman of SFSU's Cinema Department. I am organizing this event as a project for a graduate Distance Education class. All ITEC and Cinema students, along with alumni and others with an interest in Film Producing are welcome to participate.

On Tuesday Dec. 13th, 2005 between 6 pm and 7 pm, Prof. Ujlaki will be giving a one hour intensive "What is Producing" seminar, during the 442 Cinema class in Producing Film and visual media. This is a highly sought after advanced class in the art, and business, of Producing Film and other media projects that are related to film and video production.

If you have ever wondered what types of contracts, talent releases, and various waivers are needed to produce a film or documentary piece that can get distribution or be allowed into film festivals, then this is a rare opportunity to learn and ask questions from an industry profession. An industry professional who is the Chair of SFSU Cinema Dept. and dedicated to pulling away the "veil" of the Film Industry juggernaut's inner workings so students can approach their career with a solid knowledge of industry standards and not a pocket full of mysteries and rumors.

A portion of this project will be conducted in the Collaboratorium (Burk Hall Room 229) with students participating through two-way video and text conferencing. There will be full video and audio support in the Collaboratorium. To use text as a remote communication tool, we will be using Skype (if you want to connect remotely using Skype you will have to download Skype (from www.skype.com) and login use the Skype Chat utility) - we may arrange a second option also, email Robert (me) to get an update on this.

To be included in this project please RSVP to; rlf4productions@gmail.com, as feeds will be limited (to the first 200 online participants), as will the seats at the Collaboratorium – we may arrange special seating in select cases as needed for those alumni and students who are involved with media production or who maybe for their work or program.

***If you are a Tribe member note that (and which Tribe - ei.: Film makers, DV, editing, etc.) in your email and I will do my best to get you all set up. Please contact me before 3pm Tues. as I will be running through the spec. test after that time to see how our streaming video transfer rate is clocking, as well as testing our feed.***

A bit about film producer Stephen Ujlaki, chair of SFSU Cinema Department:

Stephen Ujlaki, a producer of more than 25 feature films, made-for-cable movies and documentaries, was recently named professor and chair of the San Francisco State University Cinema Department, named one of the nation's top film schools last year by Entertainment Weekly.

As vice president of development and production for HBO Pictures from

1983 to 1988, Ujlaki supervised script development, production and post-production for more than 25 films including "Baja Oklahoma"

(Julia Roberts), "Last Innocent Man" (Ed Harris) and "Act of Vengeance" (Charles Bronson).

"Film production involves many of the same administrative, logistical and people skills: ensuring that financial and creative input into the screenplay is heard, keeping everyone happy without going over budget or hurting the picture, resolving conflicts, and maintaining strong leadership and direction," said Chairman Ujlaki.

Ujlaki was most recently president of Panarea Productions, where he produced such feature films as "Loch Ness" (Ted Danson), "Hot Spot"

(Don Johnson, directed by Dennis Hopper) and "Courage Mountain"

(Charlie Sheen) as well as numerous HBO feature films including "Stiletto Dance" (Eric Roberts), "Xchange" (Stephen Baldwin) and "Hostile Intent" (Rob Lowe).

Previously, Ujlaki headed the European Feature and Television Production division for Stone Group France, a production studio owned by actor Michael Douglas. Reporting directly to Douglas, Ujlaki was responsible for bringing productions to the studio, managing film budgets, overseeing co-production partners and managing all personnel and film crews.

"San Francisco State can be known as more than just the 'independent film school,'" said Ujlaki, who founded the film program at Franconia College in New Hampshire and has also taught at the American Film Institute and Brandeis University. "A degree in cinema could also provide a wealth of career opportunities in the film industry. If one does not wish to pursue a completely independent path, there are many other marketable skills that can be developed into such careers as writing, producing, editing, directing and post-production."

Agent? Manager? Do It Yourself?

I recently got an email (one of dozens I've gotten on
this subject) asking me if I could - "explain the
difference between an agent and a manager and which
would be better for me to sign with - to get my career
going?"

Here's my answer:

Dear *****,

Neither an agent or a manager can help you "get a
career going."

The concept that a powerful man or woman can step in
and help you skip all the hard work involved in
starting an acting career - is a "fairy tale."

There is no short-cut to the top of show business (or
even to the middle for that matter). There's also no
Great Pumpkin or Easter Bunny.

If it could be done this way, then agents and managers
would simply pick any actor out of the thousands of
headshots they get every week and turn them into stars.

It cannot be done this way - which is why agents are
so unresponsive to unsolicited headshot mailings.

The good ones are pros and they're not going to waste
their valuable time trying to accomplish what they know
cannot be done.

Their businesses are similar - but not the same.

One sells a product. The agent is a sales person for
the product known as YOU. Sales people (agents) judge
their how well their business is going by how much
money they make. A really good sales professional likes
to make lots of money.

If your product is not saleable (one that people aren't
ready to buy yet) then a sales person won't make a lot
of money selling it (you).

Not surprisingly, agents are coldly business-like about
this part. Until you've managed to start your career
yourself (making money as an actor) don't expect any
really good sales people to be interested.

Managers are just what the word implies. The manage
things. Mailings, bookings, transportation, job offers,
promotion - the day to day business of YOU. (But keep
in mind that in most markets, they are precluded
by law from seeking work for you.)

The top managers are usually the top managers because
they manage very successful careers.

In the past two decades the professional manager class
has had its own difficulties with an influx of "bottom
feeders."

The worst of these are outright crooks, whose only goal
is to separate you from you money or your credit card
with no intention of helping you in any way.

Almost as bad are the ineffectual show biz hangers-on
who rent offices and go about the business of "signing"
practically anyone who walks through their door - then
what they do is they send out your pictures to every
little thing listed in the Breakdowns.

It's just postage.

Since these folks are generally clueless themselves,
they will submit you for stuff you aren't right for.
This is a good way to get labeled as a "clueless"
actor by the casting people.

Many young actors are fooled into thinking that they
must have a manager, any manager - that it's "good
business".

It isn't.

In reality you are signing an agreement to give someone
25% (or more) of your income after YOU successfully
ESTABLISH YOURSELF as an actor who makes money.

Bottom feeders spend a great deal of their business day
writing threatening letters to collect money from actors
who have realized their mistake and don't want to pay 25%
of their income for someone to do ineffective mailings.

The big boys (and girls) in the management game, are
just like agents when it comes to money. They want to
manage a "going concern" and they spend all their time
looking for the next "big thing."

Think about that.

Professional managers make a boatload of money when
they manage to sign on with a Vin Diesel or J-Lo - isn't
it reasonable to assume that they are LOOKING ALL THE
TIME. In fact, they hire people to look - they've got
part-time, secret lookers on their payroll.

Believe me, If you have what they want - if you are a
going concern with a name that you've made for yourself
- they know their managing skills will take you to a
whole new level (making LOTS of money) and they get a
big chunk of a LOT - then, believe me, they will seek
you out.

3. Most importantly, as long as you continue to
believe that your main job is looking for someone else
to help you "build" your career -- you won't be spending
enough time doing the crucial things you need to do
yourself to build your own career.

This is a very bad tactic which results in frustration,
wasted years and, ultimately, failure to achieve what
you want.

If you don't concentrate on doing your part it's
unlikely that you will ever build your business into
something big enough to be noticed by a good agent or
a good manager.

In other words, by all means keep looking for a sales
staff, and a management team - but don't neglect your
business while you're doing it.

Hope that helps.

P.S. A lot of you have written to asking me how to get
the free "Hello Pages" (Over 6000 Show Biz contacts -
casting directors, agents, managers, web sites, film
festivals, acting teachers and coaches, etc.)

Here's how it works: Go to my site, scroll down to the
VERY bottom of the home page and click on "FREEBEES."

When you get to the freebees page, sign up for my
free newsletter, Hollywood How-To, which is all about
your acting career and comes to you once a month.

You will get an email from me asking you to "confirm"
your subscription (this is so people won't sign up
other people without permission) when you confirm that
you signed up, you will get another email (in about 24
hours) that gives you the download instructions for
The "Hello Pages."

I know it's a little round-about, but I hate being
accused of sending a famous prepared meat product.

Wouldn't you?

Have a great week and ...
Although each individual component of the Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball would make for a fun evening out on the town, it's the grandness of this event that sets it apart from all others. The Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball is a Sound & Vision Musical that tells the tale of Nick Fudrich, a Detroit River dock worker during the prohibition era. As with the finest fashion collections, several common threads are used to tie together the individual components of this production: Music, fashion and staging inspired by the 1920's. Actors to give the event its grounding. And a bold narrator.

All I need to do now is finish the hand-drawn art, revise the script some more and finish up the computer art. Since I have a slow computer, the computer aspect of the project may slow me down. However, I did get what seems to be a faster-working 3-D program from a friend of mine. If I use that system, then the Superfuture will very likely be completed ahead of schedule. All I need to do in that regard is solve the format problem and then I'll be set. More Superfuture details coming soon.

On the last day of every month, I have a Games Night here at my house, and of course, you're all invited, just send a message, and I'll tell you how to get here. The chemistry is always interesting.

As it stands, the current game project is a card game, Armageddon Seating, in which players guide their flying saucers in to meddle in the destruction of Earth. I'm going to need some cartoonish-style artwork for this. Any possible takers?

But since I didn't want to go through the trouble of thinking up an all-new idea for the comic, I decided to look at some old comic book ideas I had lying around. In so doing, I found the perfect idea for this mostly computer generated-comic project: Adventures in the Superfuture!

Adventures in the Superfuture! takes place 1,000 years in the future and beyond -- an era that I define as the superfuture. The story will deal with intergalactic mercenaries, terraforming scientists and an "astrophyisical" women's prison among other things. I could go into more details on the project, but I'm still working on it. And if things go ideally, I could have Adventures in the Superfuture! done sometime in November.

as some of you know, i'm a detroit expat who moved to san francisco over ten years ago. well, i've been able to do a lot here, and it is a great city -- i don't have to have a car, can walk practically everywhere i want to go, art and culture and cheap restaurants aplenty, weather's great -- BUT:

i'll never afford a house here, not at 400 grand a pop.

so my gf (who is from the washington dc area) and i checked out another city as a potential home base -- Baltimore.

they've got a thriving art scene there. it's close to other major cities. houses are affordable.

one other thing -- the city government, we found out, is making a concerted effort to
****boost the economy by attracting artists*****

we came upon an article about the city's government designated arts district (there's galleries and a big warehouse space for artists there) that refered to this book:

http://www.salon.com/books/int/2002/06/06/florida/

look at the city that is cited in the very first sentence as the fate to avoid -- yup, it's my old hometown, Detroit.

The government is big on Casinos, but is the government big on Art? i know they tore down the Heidleberg Project, once upon a time.

Josefine -- you run a gallery -- are there tax breaks from the city? do you want them? this book says that Kwame and company would be smart to give them to you, and to many activities related to what the author calls "the creative class."

it can sound a little crass. the author says you need gays to bring the culture (and attract the money), whether gay artists or not. but hey, look how happening Ferndale got when it became a gay mecca -- right?

here's more:
I don't know how I can thank everybody enough for your quick and tireless effort on locating Miss Jones, but she's now home. To those of you who didn't know, I've had her for half of my life and learned how to play on her. She's been my constant companion through a marriage and several other trying times. Her loss would've killed me once I got out of the daze of the theft. Once again, thanks to everyone concerned, but mostly Delilah and Lee Harvey who put the word out so fast it made my head spin. I certainly could not have done such an exhaustive canvassing in my state, and they made me remember that they are so much more than band mates, even more than friends. They are my family. I love you all and thanks again to everyone who put the word out on the street!
Saturday, March 20, 2004 - DangerVille opened up for the great Reverend Horton Heat at The Club Soda in Kalamazoo, MI. Sometime around 1:30AM some pathetic-jackass-loser walked off with Danger's guitar. A photo of the guitar is here: http://www.dangerville.net/home.htm Please keep an eye out for it if you happen to be in a music store or a pawnshop, or anywhere! More than likely a "true" musician didn't steal it so the loser will probably be trying to sell it to support their drug habit. Please call Danger if you hear or see anything--(616-459-1142) or send an email to the following address: danger@dangerville.net. Thank you for any help you can offer to get this guitar back.
The Zeitgeist is lowering the curtain on live theater for good this summer, to the sadness of thespians and theatergoers alike. After seven years of edgy, avant-garde and sometimes award-winning plays — in a place where anything is possible once the lights go down and local actors, directors and playwrights rule — owner Troy Richard is transforming the venue into an independent film center.

As a film venue, Zeitgeist will showcase local works, video shorts and Richard’s own films. He says it’ll open by next year.

“The idea is that people can pay, like, $5 and watch films and videos all night,” Richard (pronounced Ree-SHARD) says.

He says the theater has lost $10,000 to $20,000 a year, but that’s not why he’s closing it. Richard went to film school, but when he graduated it was too expensive to make films. Now it’s affordable, and he’s anxious to dive into the genre, he says, indicating he might be burnt-out on theater.

“John and I did this out of our love for theater and a desire to express ourselves,” Richard says, referring to director John Jakary, who manages Zeitgeist with Richard. “The change will freshen things up,” he says. “We’re totally committed to keeping the creative dream alive.”

Actress Leah Smith, director of Real Alternative Theatre (RAT) Productions, says Zeitgeist was unique in vision and provided a rare venue for local writers. “I’m disappointed. They were just hitting their groove,” Smith says.

To sop up the bittersweet moment, on Saturday night I head down a dark stretch of Michigan Avenue. Just west of the abandoned train depot a bulbous light illuminates a series of mural paintings — only the first indication that nestled here is a quintessentially Detroit arts gem. Behind a red door, the theater preps for its second-to-last production: 3 20 Minute Plays With Drinking In Between — 2, written and directed by Richard.

Entering, I walk through Zeitgeist’s art gallery. It’s currently exhibiting some classic works by the French “master of the line” Gerard Sendrey — playful, good stuff. Then I head toward the very special place that gives Zeitgeist its “arts club” feel — the bar. The bar features an exposed-brick gallery of paintings, comfy booths, cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and Stroh’s and boxed wine, free of charge for theater visitors. The bar is small and cheery, pretty clean and tidy (not dank or too smoky), yet funky enough to feel like a find. And drinks are allowed in the theater. You can’t beat that, now, can you?

When the place becomes a movie house, Richard says the bar and the art gallery will remain. The theater became Zeitgeist when Richard bought the space in 1997 from the Michigan Gallery, a hotbed for local artists.

When lights flicker in the bar, the crowd of about 25 shuffles into the theater. The play is starting about 20 minutes late, normal at Zeitgeist.

The drama begins with a woman dressed in red with one foot in a bucket, a big knife in hand. With a wail, she puts the knife into the bucket and begins to saw off her foot. Groaning and grunting, actress Kelly Rossi’s acting is superb. Audience members gasp; the horror is palpable.

As she falls to the floor to presumably bleed to death, her husband walks in and asks whether dinner is prepared. Later, when the husband meets a zealous preacher on stage, the play unfolds into an argument about Bible-thumpers vs. gay people.

The husband and zealot are unbelievably indifferent to the woman’s condition. It turns out the preacher ordered the act as retribution to save the woman’s kids from hell after she stepped on a gay couple’s lawn. The husband yells to the preacher something like: “You people treat gay people like Hitler treated the Jews, and the Jews the Palestinians.”

This kind of loose dialogue seems to come from a void, from a world that doesn’t exist. The characters are disjointed. The play is saved on occasion by humor, and the act ends with a surprise, leaving the audience with a hearty laugh to break the tension.

The second play involves an interesting interaction between the action on the stage and a video playing to the lower right. On stage, a dictator and a prisoner discuss how and why the dictator wiped out the prisoner’s entire race. Meanwhile audience members are drawn to a sort-of America’s funniest home videos montage, with shots of a nun falling down stairs and Asian people dressed as butterfly-superheroes gliding toward a Velcro spider-web, only to fall into a water pit below. I feel guilty as I stifle fits of laughter, mesmerized (along with other audience members) by the television, while such serious discussion and acting is taking place. That’s the point. Clever.

The third play is great. James Mio dons a bear suit and face paint and sits at a bar across from three people oblivious to his monologue on the meaning of life and society.

As the act unfolds, Richard’s postmodern characters, exhibited throughout the three plays, start to make sense. Richard presents an obsessive, slightly bizarre commentary on the ills of society, through the voices of exaggerated, highly emotional characters. They’ve got their own logic in a land that is similar to ours, but distant.

Moments of humor and greater meaning rear up throughout the night to surprise and delight, amid the abstract landscape of the absurd.

As I leave Zeitgeist after my final PBR, the sadness of the closing hits me. I’d like to see more Zeitgeist plays, and there’s only one more left, The Chairs by Eugene Ionesco, directed by Jakary and opening April 23.

Art Beat

Painter Tom Humes is a genius, Detroit’s postmodern van Gogh in a Renaissance sort of way, and art fans should not miss his solo show at Detroit Artists Market.

In “Little Monsters,” he utilizes his own palette of sickly yellows, teals, blues and pinks to depict the same face, over and over — a haunted, hairless man with big, reflective eyes. One painting shows the wrinkled man with an egg, a flip on classic man-with-skull works; another shows him at a strange swimming pool with rural lands in the background. Still another shows the man in a stark lonely room with a window painted behind him showing a fanciful vista; others make plays on Renaissance thinkers and modern settings like “the room of the painter.” A little rubber duckie makes repeated cameos.

As Humes places his man in familiar-yet-new settings, he co-opts art history, incorporating it into the world of his thoughtful character, who contemplates and takes over the world. As the artist repaints the Renaissance, the classics, and modernism, it is his hand that makes the works scream: “Look at me! Think about me! How do you know me? What am I saying?”

Also showing at DAM are large, commanding charcoal landscapes by Mary Potts. She uses scribbled thick lines of black and even typed code to create mesmerizing details of the ocean and the sky.

3 Twenty Minute Plays With Drinking In Between — 2 plays Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through March 14 and on Sunday, March 7, at 4 p.m. Zeitgeist is located at 2661 Michigan Ave., west of the Michigan Central Train Depot on the south side just west of the overpass. Tickets are $15. Call 313-965-9192.

The Detroit Artists Market is located at 4719 Woodward Ave., three blocks south of the DIA. Call 313-832-8540.

If you didn't know this, well get with it, there is. You can get info on the event times, location and such at www.dirtydetroit.com. The reason I mention this?

It's two-fold really. First, a local artist by the name of Matthew Martin will be exhiting 3 pieces in said "Dirty Show". They are wonderful pieces that yes, I am a subject in. And yes, this is a shameless plug for my own ego...deal with it!

Second, during this weekend Severance, the gallery that I'm the director of, will be open for anyone that would like to come and check out the space, the art, whatever. Friday we will be open from 7pm-12am. Saturday from 10am-2pm and then again from 7pm-10pm. Sunday from 3pm-9pm. Please feel free to stop in during these hours. We're only a short drive from the Tangent and if you need directions, please feel free to ask. And for further information visit http://severance.ath.cx.

My point? Well, my point is don't forget to bring your checkbooks/credit cards. With both of these art exhibits this weekend, you are really going to find it difficult to walk away without something to hang on your wall, put on a pedestal, or wrap around your.....I won't be that vulgur, but I think you get my drift.
Hope to see you at both events!

And to make a long story short, I think doing some modeling here will help keep me sane. I'm calling the schools, but can anyone point me at a group that might like to work from a new model? I've been at it for 13 years--drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, draped and not.
January 23, 2004 – February 22, 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, January 23, 2004
7 pm – 11pm

Severance, located in Eastern Market in downtown Detroit, will be exhibiting paintings created by Scott Hullinger. The opening reception will be held on Friday, January 23, 2004 from 7 o’clock pm until 11 o’clock pm. The exhibit will run until Sunday, February 22, 2004.

Hullinger’s work is best described as “Biological Landscapes”, explorations into the microscopic world that surrounds each and every one of us. He shows the natural and industrial conflict ever present in our world, by setting parasitic organisms against the backdrop of world industries, such as stock quotes. Fall into the world that you already belong to, only this time look through a microscopic lens.

Hullinger creates these beautifully powerful paintings using media created by nature, like beeswax and paper. Just another facet to show the continuously dueling worlds of industry and nature.

Hullinger is a Detroit artist that has shown at such places as The Scarab Club, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, The Majestic, and The Detroit Contemporary, to name a few. He received his Master of Art degree from Wayne State University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Western Michigan University. Currently teaching Art in the South Redford school district, Hullinger continues to create these masterpieces.

Detroit’s very own Keith Kemp will provide the audio landscape for the opening reception. Live broadcast of the event will be provided by The Daughters at http://thedaughters.ath.cx.
The evening will be a wonderful night of art, music and food provided by Harry’s Detroit. Harry’s is located at 2482 Clifford Detroit, MI 48201 ph: 313.964.1575 www.harrysdetroit.com.

Alright, kids, it's time to come out and support a fairly new
club at the State Theatre on Saturday night. I know what
you're all thinking...it's the State Theatre, I've been there
before. Well, I have to tell you that you're wrong. The
inside of the State Theatre isn't in it's same old state (like
the pun?).

I'm not going to explain it, but have I steered you wrong in
the past? Come on out, your cover is on me. You just need
to let me know who's coming.

A new look, a new feel, dancing, hot women, hot men,
drinks, and me. What else do you need for a fun-filled
evening in Detroit? How about the legendary Tom T spinning? Anything else I can do for you while I'm at it?

For all of those that already know Severance, we expect to see all of at the opening next Friday, November 14. The doors open at 7 pm and we'll be kicking it in the Eastern Market until 11 pm.

For those of you that aren't "in the know", Severance is a new exhibition space located in the Eastern Market of Detroit. Don't think that just because you haven't heard of it yet, we don't expect to see you, too.

The show is an exhibit of Larry Zelensky's digital paintings. He has been traveling from his suburban home to his downtown studio documenting the fall of his childhood neighborhoods. It's a fantastic show and it's also a little educational. God, did I just say that?

The Daughters will be making their debut, providing the audio landscape for the evening. The music will also be streamed over the internet for those of you that can't seem to get off their lazy @$$&$ and come down to the scary downtown area for an event to write home about.

Food will be provided by Russell Street Deli, also located in the Eastern Market.

For any other information, please refer to the website at http://severance.ath.cx.
Can't wait to see all of you in this old place!

The DFT’s presentation of Matthew Barney’s unparalleled, seven-hour exploration of artistic creation and destruction marks the first time in this area that the full, 35mm version of The Cremaster Cycle will be shown in the order in which it was conceived. Performance dates and times are listed below. Separate tickets are required for each screening, including the three screenings which comprise Sunday’s marathon presentation.

"Barney’s cycle can now be perceived as one mega-film. It’s rather like watching Wagner or Robert Wilson or Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev and letting the imagery captivate you on its own, preverbal terms. There’s time for reflection later, as the images cling stubbornly in your brain. This is utterly original stuff." - John Rockwell, The New York Times
